FAQ: WHAT IS GREAT SOUND?
Simply put, bad sound can happen to good music. The problem is, in the era of the internet anyone can claim to be a mastering professional. There are stolen programs out there for download that allow people to mess around with the levels and push out a sound that could appear mastered. This music is not considered mastered by the professionals of today. This is simply music with too high levels. A trained ear will hear the empty hollow effects of a bad mastering. Your music has all the elements of becoming round, full and should raise the hairs on your arms when listening to it.
A professional mastering engineer has worked with digital and even analog equipment that helps make an optimal assessment to the music during the mastering process. This combined with professional software, such as Pyramix is important for any professional mastering engineer and isn’t something anyone can package in a cracked “mastering” software.
A lot of people think that the producer can do the mastering as well. We don’t recommend this. Not only do they need a listening room built for mastering, your music also requires a fresh set of ears and personal distance to the music in order to produce effective results. All of these things are important when seeking great sound.
What is bad sound? It is what happens when music winds up in the wrong hands.
